World Shakuhachi Festival Texas 2025
1週間ほど日本を離れアメリカへ
ヒューストンのA&M大学で行われたWorld尺八Festival2025に参加させていただきました。
振り返ってみると、想像を遥かに超える素晴らしい経験が出来たと思います。
世界中で尺八が愛されている事、そして尺八という楽器の可能性と魅力を存分に味わった1週間でした。
World Shakuhachi Festivalは4年に1度開催され、世界中の尺八演奏家や愛好家の集まる大規模イベントです。
私は今回初参加で、お声がけ頂いた時すでにラインナップされている錚々たるメンバーを見て、私などが参加して良いものか悩みましたが…なかなか無い機会ということで思い切って参加を決意しました！
Festivalでは、朝全員でのロ吹きからはじまり、午前中から沢山のワークショップ、午後のミニコンサートが2回、そして夕方からのメインコンサートという流れで四日間続きます。
また、ショップやコンクールも開催され、参加したいイベントがありすぎて迷ってしまう超豪華な内容でした。
私も隙間時間を使って、いくつかのワークショップとミニコンサート、そしてショップにも伺うことができて、とても充実した日々を送ることができました。
今回私が携わったイベントは、4つのメインコンサートと1つのワークショップでした。
festival初日
まず、僭越ながら今回参加者全員で演奏する楽曲の作曲という大役を努めさせていただいたので、朝はその曲の練習から始まります

そして、翌日のコンサートと当日のコンサートのリハーサルの合間にワークショップを受けました。
メインコンサートでは、中島孔山さんと二重奏で「胡蝶」を演奏しました。（胡蝶の内容はこちらをどうぞ）
とても不思議な曲だったと思いますが、公演後はたくさんの方に声をかけていただき、この上ない思いでした。聴いて下さった皆様ありがとうございました！
この曲は演奏者に委ねられる部分が多いので、演奏者の数だけバリエーションがあります。ぜひご興味があれば演奏してみてください♪
2日目
この日のメインステージはJSPNをfeatureした内容になっており、私は「陰陽句」と藤原道山先生作曲の「竹聲松影」に参加しました。
「竹聲松影」では道山先生の指揮で、海外メンバーも含めて大人数での演奏となりました。
全員では限られた時間で2回しかリハーサルが無かったのですが、お客様からはとても綺麗な響きだったとのお声がありました。私は英語が全く話せませんが、言葉ではなく音楽で心を合わせて演奏することができて、感激した1曲でした。
さてさて、内容がありすぎて長文になってしまいましたので、3日目以降は後編で
I left Japan for about a week and went to the USA
I participated in the World Shakuhachi Festival 2025 held in Houston.
Looking back, I believe I had an incredible experience that far exceeded my expectations. It was a week where I fully enjoyed the love for the shakuhachi around the world, as well as the possibilities and charm of this instrument.
The World Shakuhachi Festival is held every four years and is a large-scale event where shakuhachi players and enthusiasts from around the world gather.
This was my first time participating, and when I saw the impressive lineup of members who were already on board when I was invited, I hesitated about whether I should participate. However, I decided to go for it since it was a rare opportunity!
The festival started with a collective blowing session each morning, followed by numerous workshops in the morning, two mini-concerts in the afternoon, and a main concert in the evening, continuing for four days. Additionally, shops and competitions were held, making it an extravagant event with so many activities to choose from.
I was able to use some free time to attend a few workshops, mini-concerts, and visit the shops, which made my days very fulfilling.
The events I was involved in included four main concerts and one workshop.
On the first day of the festival, I had the honor of composing a piece to be performed by all participants, so I started the morning with rehearsals for that piece (this was every day ).
Then, in between rehearsals for the concerts happening the next day and the same day’s concert, I attended a workshop.
At the main concert, I performed a duet of “Kochou” with Kozan Nakajima. (For the content of “Kochou,” please refer here.) I think it was a very mysterious piece, and after the performance, many people approached me, which left me with indescribable feelings. Thank you all for listening! Since this piece has many parts left to the performers, there’s a variation for each player. Please do try performing it if you’re interested!
Day 2
The main stage on this day featured JSPN, and I participated in “Inyoku” and “Chikusei Shouei,” composed by Michiyama Fujiwara. In “Chikusei Shouin,” we performed with a large number of participants, including overseas members, under the direction of Michiyama-sensei. While we only had two rehearsals in limited time with everyone, we received feedback from the audience that it had a very beautiful resonance. Although I can’t speak English at all, I was moved to perform together through music, not words.
Now, as the content is quite extensive, I will continue the rest from day three in a follow-up.
